Safety management

Safe environment

The promotion of a culture of safety is a priority for all the businesses and one of the five pillars of Ultra’s Sustainability Model. Since 2015, the businesses have been revising their risk analysis studies and safety procedures, a goal set by the Company’s senior management through the medium of the Ultra Safety Program.

Ipiranga’s safety program is reflected in the acronym, SIGA+ (Ipiranga Management System applied to Health, Safety, Environment, Quality and Social Responsibility) and is divided into three pillars: people, physical conditions and procedures. In 2017, 100% of the operational units were inspected and the company’s Risk Analysis Reports revised. Ipiranga continued a process of engaging the leadership, implementing a continued monitoring program for improving the safety skills of operational leaders. As a result, there was a reduction of 38% in the accident rate with time off work compared to 2016.

As usual, the operational units were inspected, registering a 12% reduction in non-compliance of the physical conditions of installations compared with 2016. In addition, the scope of the inspections was extended to include the 53 distribution pools operated by third parties (in which Ipiranga has one percent of the assets).

Oxiteno has a culture for reinforcing safety attitudes, the result of management focused on the dangers and their potential impacts. This is undertaken through the identification of risks at each stage of production and also in the various activities performed, thereby reducing the probability of faults and investing in the capacity of employees to detect violations and correct them.

In December, the Mauá (SP) operation held the largest and the most complete emergency simulation in its history at the Greater ABC Petrochemical Complex. In conjunction with the fire department, participating Mutual Assistance Plan companies, representatives from civil defense and other safety organs, a product leak was simulated followed by the complete evacuation of the petrochemical complex

to test preventive measures and mitigation of impacts of an incident on the region.

Oxiteno is also part of the Mutual Assistance Plan (PAM), a collaborative network of chemical companies in the Paraiba Valley, state of São Paulo, for mitigating and preventing accidents. In 2017, the company ran its first course focused on safety precautions for professionals in the ABC region, also in the state of São Paulo.

In 2017, at its Capuava (SP) production base, Ultragaz introduced its Safe Attitude Program for reinforcing the safety culture among its employees, outsourced workers and service providers. The program is divided into five phases: corporate Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental (HSE) governance; diagnosis; development of the leadership; identification of the risks, employee engagement and improvements in operational discipline; sustainability and consolidation of the safety culture in the company’s processes. The Program is being extended to a further 12 units and by late 2019, will have been implemented at all its 18 production bases. Worthy of note is that management and monitoring of HSE is tracked using parameters and one of the items examined by the local audits undertaken every year at the company’s production bases.

Ultracargo continued to expand its Occupational Health and Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) structure to ensure greater preparedness of its team in the routine activities of the operation. Between 2016 and 2017, the company invested more than R$ 100 million in this area. In 2017 alone, more than 40 thousand hours were dedicated to training in safety techniques. Among other measures introduced was the implementation of a program for HSE performance recognition; the auditing of HSE Legal Requisites at 50 contracted supplier companies; a revision of the Risk Analysis Studies at all terminals, projects for applying study recommendations and emergency attendance plans, including the creation of operational plans. These and other initiatives have already had important results in reducing safety violations and accidents and have been transforming the company’s HSE culture.
